The lots here are deeper than the rest of the grid, the houses are 1920s and 1930s custom work, and the trees that went in with them came off a nursery list rather than out of the woods — sycamore, red and English oak, Norway and sugar maple, copper beech, black walnut, and the occasional atlas cedar or monkey puzzle standing in a front lawn like it was dared to.

That matters, because none of those behave like the Douglas fir and bigleaf maple we handle everywhere else in the county. They carry long horizontal limbs, they were set out as single specimens with room to spread, and they are all reaching the same point in their structural life at roughly the same time.

These Trees Fail at the Union, Not at the Root

Out on the floodplain flats the classic failure is a whole tree levering out of soft ground. Up on these blocks it is more often a limb or an entire leader tearing out of a tight fork, usually under wet snow or a heavy still rain when the canopy is loaded and there is no wind to blame. Sycamore and Norway maple in particular grow codominant stems with bark trapped in the seam, and that seam never gets stronger — it only gets more loaded.

It is also the failure most worth preventing, because these trees are worth keeping. Shortening an overextended limb, clearing deadwood out of the top, and in the right case running a cable between two leaders buys decades on something that could not be replaced in a lifetime.

The Alley Decides the Job

Old West Side blocks have alleys behind them, and the alley usually dictates how the work runs. Plenty of the trees we take out back here cannot be reached from the street at all — the chip truck goes in off the alley, past a detached garage, under a service drop, with a fence eighteen inches off the mirror. Where the alley is blocked or too soft to hold weight, the wood comes out over the top with a crane set in the street instead.

That is why we look before we quote. The tree is rarely the hard part on these lots. Getting to it, and getting it out, is.

Roots, Sidewalks and the Neighbor’s Half of the Canopy

The other running conversation here is roots. Surface roots lift the old walk panels, work into century-old clay laterals, and creep under garage slabs. Cutting them to fix the concrete is one of the most reliable ways to turn a healthy tree into a hazard tree, so that decision deserves better than being handed to whoever is pouring the walk.

And because these lots share property lines under enormous canopies, a fair number of jobs here involve two households. We will walk the line with both of you, say plainly where the trunk actually sits, and put the scope in writing before a saw starts.
