This is the failure mode people out here never see coming. Trees that grew up inside a closed stand held each other up — narrow crowns, tall skinny stems, roots that never had to anchor against much because the wind stopped a hundred yards away. Then the adjoining ground gets harvested, or a neighbor opens a building site, and overnight your back property line is the edge of the woods.

Those stems have the wrong shape for the job they now have. The first serious south wind after a cut is when they start going over, often several in a row, all falling the same direction along the new edge. If timber has come off the ground behind you recently, that back line is worth a look before winter rather than after.

Long Driveways, Overhead Lines and Trees You Did Not Plant

Most parcels up Coal Creek Road are reached by a gravel drive running through timber, usually with a power line following it in. Both are vulnerable to the same tree. When one comes down across the drive you are cut off, and if it took the line with it there is a second problem lying live on the ground.
