Most of what we do in the port district is vegetation management that happens to need a chainsaw and a climber. Nobody down here is emotionally attached to a tree. The question is whether it is standing where a truck needs sight distance, a gate needs to swing, or a ditch needs to drain.

That flips the job around. On a Longview grid lot the work is figuring out how to take one prized maple apart over a house. Out here it is usually a long run of volunteer growth on flat, open, wind-exposed ground, and the constraint is not the tree at all — it is everything moving around it.

Cottonwood Is the Species That Costs People Money Here

Black cottonwood grows fast on wet fill and it gets big fast. It also sheds. Cottonwood will drop a heavy limb on a still, hot afternoon with no wind involved at all, which tends to be exactly when a yard is full of parked trailers and people walking to their trucks. The wood is soft, decay travels through it quickly, and a union on a fast-grown stem is rarely as strong as the limb it is holding.

Working in a Yard That Is Still Running

There is no drop zone in an operating facility. Between containers, log decks, rail spurs, stacked product and trucks moving all shift, most removals down here come apart in controlled pieces or come out with a crane even though there is technically room to fell. We plan around your traffic instead of asking you to plan around ours, and where the only safe window is a weekend or a shutdown, we take the weekend.

Rail is its own rule. Anything within reach of a track is the railroad’s call before it is ours, the same way anything touching a conductor belongs to Cowlitz PUD first. We do not improvise around either one.

Contract Work, Property Managers and the Paperwork Side

A good share of the work along Industrial Way, through the Mint Farm and out toward Barlow Point is contracted rather than one-off: annual fence-line clearing, a written look at the trees over a parking area before somebody signs a lease, brush knocked back on a dry lot before late summer.
