A leaner over a state highway is not a felling job. Traffic on this stretch moves, sight lines close up around the bends, and a drop zone that crosses the fog line is not a drop zone at all. Those trees come down in pieces, rigged and lowered, with the road kept open. Where the work genuinely cannot happen without stopping traffic, that gets planned and flagged ahead of time rather than improvised on the day.

Then there is the question of whose tree it is. The strip between your fence and the pavement may sit inside the state right-of-way, which means the decision is not yours or ours to make alone. Power Lines Follow the Corridor and Change Every Plan

The distribution line runs the length of West Side Highway, and on long linear properties the service drop often travels a good distance off the road to reach the house. That puts conductors in places people forget about — through a hedgerow, over a driveway, behind a barn. We work clear of energized lines, we never guess whether a conductor is dead, and anything needing to be de-energized or covered gets called in to Cowlitz PUD before a saw comes out. If a tree is already touching a line, stay away from it and from anything metal it is contacting.

The bank along here grows black cottonwood, and cottonwood is a standing obligation rather than a one-time job. It is the species most likely to put a limb through a roof with no weather to blame for it, and the trees rooted right at the waterline lose a little more of their hold every high-water year. One that stood well back from the edge when the house was built may not be standing back from it now.

Here is the good news about working out here. Most of these parcels are long and open, so the chipper can usually get within a few steps of where the tree lands. Price on any tree job is driven far more by how far material has to travel than by how big the tree is — a fir in a fenced backyard, where every branch is hand-carried through a gate, costs more than a bigger fir standing in a pasture. West Side Highway properties tend to land on the good side of that math, and leaving the rounds for firewood instead of hauling them saves more still.
