Tree Service in Lexington, WA
Lexington has no city hall, no mayor and no tree ordinance — it is unincorporated Cowlitz County strung along the West Side Highway north of Kelso. That one fact changes the answer to almost every tree question a homeowner here asks us.

Being outside the city limits is the practical difference between a Lexington property and one three minutes down the road in Kelso. There is no municipal tree code sitting between you and the fir in your side yard. County rules apply instead, and for an ordinary yard tree on private ground that usually means the decision is yours to make.
In Lexington the County Sets the Rules, Not a City Tree Code
The exception is the river, and it is a real one. Shoreline and critical-area protections follow the Cowlitz regardless of whose jurisdiction the mailbox falls in. A cottonwood standing forty feet off the bank is a different conversation than the same cottonwood at the back of a two-acre parcel, and the difference has nothing to do with the tree and everything to do with the strip of ground it stands on.
We do not guess at this and we do not hand you a maybe. During the free on-site estimate we check what applies to your specific address, and if the honest answer is that the county needs to weigh in before anyone cuts, that is what you will hear. Better to spend ten minutes on it beforehand than to find out afterward.
Room to Work Is Worth Real Money on West Side Highway Acreage
Most Lexington properties have something a city lot never does: space. Long gravel drives, open pasture behind the house, a clear lay-down area for wood and brush. That changes the price of a removal more than people expect. On a tight Longview grid lot every piece has to be roped and lowered past a fence. Out here we can often fell the whole stem into an open field, buck it where it lands, and feed the chipper from a stack instead of a rope. Fewer hours in the tree means a smaller number at the bottom of the estimate.
What the space does not excuse is driving wherever we like. Soft shoulders, culverts under gravel drives and unmarked drainfields are all easy to wreck with a loaded truck, and any of them costs more to repair than the tree cost to remove.
- We walk the drive first and find the tightest turn and the softest spot before anything heavy moves
- You point out the drainfield, the well head, the buried water line and anything else we would not see
- Truck and chipper stage on gravel or firm ground, not on the lawn, unless you tell us otherwise
- The tree comes down and gets bucked and chipped where it lies
- Wood is stacked where you want it or hauled off, and the site is raked before we leave
Fir and Cottonwood Along the Cowlitz Bank
The bank trees are what we get called about most in Lexington. Mature Douglas fir and cottonwood grew up with all the water they could want, and the river has been quietly rearranging the ground under them the entire time. A tree can be perfectly sound through the trunk and still be standing on a bank that is no longer fully there. Undercut roots on the water side, a slow lean toward the channel, and one high-water winter is all it takes.
The older riverside homes here sit close to those trees, and the small-acreage places have shops, fences and livestock in the fall zone. We look at lean, root exposure, and what is downhill before we recommend anything. If a tree can be kept with a reduction rather than removed, that is what we will tell you. Licensed and insured, and the estimate is free either way.
