Shore Pine and Sitka Spruce Are the Two Trees That Matter

Shore pine is the peninsula’s own tree: short, dense, twisted, as tough as anything that grows in salt wind. It is also short-lived, and it holds dead wood inside a crown that still reads green from the road. When one fails it splits at a fork rather than tipping. Sitka spruce does the opposite — it gets very large, takes salt better than any conifer we handle, and when it goes it lifts the root plate and a circle of lawn with it. Those two, plus hemlock and alder, are most of the canopy from Seaview to Oysterville.

The Sand Is Rarely the Weak Point People Assume

Owners expect us to blame the sand. Usually we cannot. Roots run wide and shallow through it, the wind has been constant since the tree was a seedling, and the plate it built is better than it looks. What brings trees down here is change. A neighbor clears the row that broke the wind. A new house fills the gap. A dune gets scraped flat for a driveway. Now a tree that spent thirty years in shelter carries load it never grew wood for — and in a wet winter, when the table rises into the root zone and the sand quits behaving like ground, that is when it goes.

The Ocean Side and the Bay Side Behave Differently

West of the highway you get salt burn, crowns flagged so hard every branch points inland, and pines the weather has already pruned better than a saw could. East toward Willapa Bay — along Sandridge, through the cranberry ground, up toward Nahcotta and Oysterville — it is sheltered enough for tall spruce and hemlock and the failures look more like what we see at home: root disease, saturated soil, whole trees tipping. One peninsula, two conversations.

Most of These Houses Are Empty When the Wind Is Working

Much of the peninsula is second homes, rentals and platted subdivisions where the owner is elsewhere from October through May — precisely the season that breaks trees. The limb that came down in November gets found in April by a renter or a caretaker. If you cannot get over often, the cheapest move is having the trees looked at before storm season rather than paying for what they did after. We take property manager and association work on that basis, several addresses in a day, which is what makes the drive from Kelso add up.
