Tree Service in Ryderwood, WA
Ryderwood was built by Long-Bell in the 1920s to house the men cutting the timber, and then the timber came back. Second-growth Douglas fir now stands over a town of small company houses that were never platted with a hundred-foot tree in mind.

One road in, and the same road back out. That single fact shapes how we work here more than anything else — no through traffic to route around, no shoulder to stage on, and houses set close enough together that the neighbor’s roof sits inside the drop zone of your tree.
It is a small place, roughly four hundred people, and it is a fifty-five-and-over town. The calls we get sound different from anywhere else in Cowlitz County: less take it all out, more that limb over the carport worries me and I cannot get up there anymore.
Small Lots Under Big Second-Growth Fir in Ryderwood
The original company houses went up on small platted lots, close to the street and close to one another. The Douglas fir around and between them has had a century to work on it. What that leaves is a mature forest canopy sitting directly over a 1920s town — trees with real diameter, real height, and no room underneath for a single piece to fall freely.
So there is no drop zone. A fir behind a Ryderwood house typically has the house on one side, a fence and a neighbor on the other, an overhead service drop somewhere through the middle, and a shed or carport filling whatever gap is left. The answer is climbing and rigging. Pieces come off small, get lowered on a line to a groundman, and go straight into the chipper. It takes longer than felling and it is the only responsible way to work a town built this tight.
What changes the plan on a job in here
- Whether the chipper can park close enough that brush is not hand-carried a block
- Where the overhead service drop crosses, and whether it has to be cleared before we start
- How much of the tree overhangs a neighbor’s lot, and whether they should know the date
- Whether the wood is going into a woodshed on site or leaving on the truck
- Whether the ground is soft enough that a stump grinder will rut the lawn
Cleanup Is the Part Ryderwood Actually Judges Us On
In a town where most residents are well past the age of dragging limbs to a burn pile, a crew that leaves the mess has not done half the job — it has done none of it. We rake, we blow off the drive and the walk, we pick chips out of flower beds, and we do not leave rounds sitting in the yard for somebody else to sort out later. If you want the wood, tell us your stove length and where the shed is and it gets bucked and stacked. If you do not, it goes on the truck.
We would rather tell somebody their tree is healthy than sell them a removal. That has cost us jobs. It has also earned us most of the calls that came afterward.
What We Get Called for Around the Old Ryderwood Townsite
Storm limbs and deadwood hanging over structures lead the list, followed by full removals of fir that have simply outgrown the lot — trees that were fine at forty feet and are a genuine problem at a hundred and twenty. After that comes crown cleaning and raising so a house gets some light back, and stump grinding on lots where the grinder has to fit through a gate. When a tree is worth keeping, cabling or bracing a weak union is often cheaper than removal, and we will say so rather than reaching for the saw.
The town sits right up against the Lewis County line at the end of the road from Vader, and what governs a given parcel — county rules, an old townsite easement, a shared drive — is not always obvious from the street. We sort that out while we are there for the estimate so nobody gets surprised later. We are based down in Kelso, less than an hour away, and there has never been a travel charge to come look at a tree in Ryderwood.
