Almost everything that makes tree work here unusual comes down to two facts: the wind arrives off open Pacific with nothing upwind to slow it, and a lot of the ground the trees are standing in is sand, peat or tidal mud. Neither one behaves like the inland valleys.

Sitka Spruce Country, and What Salt Does to It

Close to the water, Sitka spruce is the tree that wins. It shrugs off the salt spray that burns back nearly everything else, it grows to real size on this coast, and it carries heavy limbs high in the crown. Crowns get flagged — foliage dies on the windward side and the whole canopy pushes inland — and that lopsided loading is the thing you are actually looking at when a coastal spruce comes apart.

Spruce here also lose their leaders to weevil over and over, which is why so many of them carry two or three competing tops instead of one. Those forks are weak unions holding a lot of sail. On a lot near the dune line, that defect is worth more attention than the moss on the trunk.

Move inland and it shifts to western hemlock, redcedar and red alder. Alder is the one that catches people out. It seeds into any disturbed ground, grows quickly, and then starts shedding limbs and whole stems while the owner still thinks of it as a young tree.

Rooting Depth Runs the Whole Show

On the Long Beach Peninsula the ground is dune sand with the water table sitting close underneath. Shore pine and spruce root wide and shallow because there is nothing deeper to root into. Trees there usually do not snap — they lift, plate and all, and go over as one piece. Ocean Park, Seaview and the ridge lots behind them all share that soil.

Around the bay at Bay Center, Tokeland and the lower Naselle and Willapa river flats, the ground is soft tidal and peaty material that will not carry a crane outrigger or a loaded chip truck without mats. Up in the Willapa Hills the soils are deep and productive, sitting on steep slopes that move during long wet stretches. Three soils, three completely different plans for getting equipment on and off the site.

Wind Is a Season Here, Not an Event

The county takes winter storms broadside from the southwest, usually on ground that has already been saturated for weeks. Full-strength gusts on soaked soil is why coastal windthrow shows up in patches instead of single trees: one opening exposes the next row, and the failures walk downwind from there.

That is also why edge trees deserve a plan. Trees you leave standing on a newly opened windward edge grew up sheltered and have never carried that load. Cranberry growers on the peninsula run into the same tradeoff every time they open ground for light and frost drainage, and so does anyone clearing part of a wooded lot.
