Tree Service in Raymond, WA

Raymond sits at the head of tidewater on the Willapa, so the river through town rises and falls twice a day, and a good share of the flat ground the town is built on was put there by a dredge during the mill years. Both of those facts show up in the trees long before they show up in anything else.

Kelso to Raymond is I-5 north and then State Route 6 west over the Willapa Hills — a planned trip, not a swing by. We group Pacific County work: several jobs on one day, with the estimate usually falling on a different visit than the saw work.

The Town Is Built on Fill and the Water Is Right Underneath

Raymond went up on tideflat at the head of navigation, and much of the level ground you drive across was hauled or pumped into place when the mills were running. Under a yard on the low side of town, fine river sediment and old fill sit a foot or two above water most of the winter. Roots do not drive down into that; they run sideways through the top layer where the air is. A spruce four decades into that arrangement carries a wide, shallow plate under a crown that kept right on growing.

Charge that ground up in December, put a southwest wind up the river behind it, and the plate lets go — usually in one piece, with the lawn still attached. The tree looked fine the week before. Out here the ground tells you more than the top does.

Alder Puts More Wood on the Ground Than Anything Taller

The Willapa valley grows red alder fast on any cutover or disturbed ground, then does not keep it long. By the time an alder is tall enough to reach a roof it is frequently hollow at the butt or shedding tops, and it breaks rather than bends. Cottonwood along the river and the sloughs does the same at a larger scale, letting go of limbs heavy enough to go through a shop roof on a still afternoon.

Mill-era yard trees are the other half of the work. Sitka spruce and western hemlock planted or simply left when these houses were new now stand well over small wood-frame homes on narrow lots. Hemlock is the one that fools people: root decay advances for years behind a top that still looks healthy from the street.

Narrow Lots, Back Alleys and One Highway Through the Middle

  • Wind-thrown spruce and hemlock on the low ground near the river
  • Alder and cottonwood removals along the Willapa and the South Fork
  • Cleanup after a southwest blow — trees on shops, fences and driveways
  • Clearing alder and blackberry off pasture edges and fence lines up SR 6
  • Stump grinding on town lots where the machine has to come down an alley
  • Reduction and deadwooding on oversized yard trees over century-old houses

Mill-town platting means short lots, alleys behind the houses, and service drops crossing exactly where you would like to put a top. Plenty of Raymond removals come down in pieces on rope simply because there is nowhere to lay a tree flat. On the highway side, staging has to keep traffic and log trucks moving, so that gets planned in advance rather than sorted out on the morning.

What Scheduling Honestly Looks Like From This Far Out

A Raymond job needs more lead time than one in Longview, and we would rather hand you a day we can hold than a hopeful one. When a storm works over the valley we take Pacific County calls outside business hours — what we will not claim is a truck in your driveway in twenty minutes. Anyone promising that from the far side of the Willapa Hills is guessing. We are licensed and insured, and the on-site estimate is free whether the job ends up ours or not.

Ryan walks every estimate himself and climbs the trees he quotes, so the person telling you what your spruce is doing is the one who will be tied into it a week later. The crew — Lance, Bryce and Zack — leaves a yard raked. On this side of the hills, showing up on the day we said turns out to matter more than anything we could put on a truck door.

Raymond Tree Service Questions

  • It is real work, and it is scheduled work. Pacific County jobs go on a list and the outfit comes over SR 6 once that list is worth a full day, which means a few more days of lead time than a Cowlitz County job. If you call while we already have a Willapa day on the calendar, we will usually fold your estimate into it rather than making a separate trip.

Ryan was so fantastic! We had a large pine branch fall on top of our house that was lodged into the roof. After calling a few other services who were not very helpful we got ahold of Columbia Tree Prof. He answered right away and was very kind and helpful! He knew exactly what to do to help us and he was able to remove the branch within the hour! We are so thankful for his help and his generosity! We have two trees on our property that will need to be removed and we will definitely be giving our business to this company! Local, Efficient, professional, knowledgeable, Skilled. Can’t go wrong!

Mr Norris removed a huge fir tree inches away from my house in one day just as he promised. If you have a hazardous tree requiring fancy rope work and want a professional this tree service is the right pick. Really funny guy, he became a good friend and his pricing beat everyone else by a lot. Do yourself a favor and give him a call
