The valley bottoms are farmed and quiet, but the ground behind them goes up hard and fast, and the trees on that pitch stand over your roof, your shop and your lane. A tree that would be a straightforward afternoon on flat ground becomes a rigging job once everything below it is downhill.

Red Alder Is What Costs People Money Out Here

The hillsides above the valley roads came back thick in red alder after logging, and alder does not age gracefully. Fast, brittle, shallow-rooted, and it hits its ceiling early. What it does not do is fail politely one tree at a time. A stand reaches the end of its run and comes apart in groups — a few go over, the ones behind them lose their shelter, and within a couple of winters you have a leaning slope instead of a leaning tree.

So on alder we want to know what the whole hillside is doing before taking anything out — pulling the wrong trees hands the rest a load they cannot carry. Usually we work the section that threatens something and leave the remainder standing as a windbreak.

Saturated Slopes Move, and the Trees Ride Down With Them

Rain here is not what rain is in Kelso. These slopes charge fully and stay that way for months, and when the ground is that wet the failure is not always a snapped stem — sometimes the bench itself creeps and takes the trees with it. The signature is specific: a whole row leaning the same way downhill, trunks with a curved sweep at the base, fence lines out of true, open cracks in the soil uphill.

Telling those apart matters. A tree leaning because it grew toward light has built wood to match and is usually fine. One leaning because the dirt under it is moving will not stop, and removing it does nothing about the ground. We will tell you which you have.

Getting to the tree is half the planning. Highway 4 is two lanes with little shoulder, the valley roads narrow as they climb, and several creek crossings are small bridges with posted weight limits a loaded chip truck has to respect. On the flat the problem reverses: diked bottomland that carries a truck fine in August will not carry one in February.

So the access route gets scouted before anyone settles on a method, and the truck leaves Kelso carrying everything the job needs — there is no parts run from the middle of West Valley. If your job wants dry ground, it goes on the summer list rather than tearing up a field to hit a date.
