It is a whole-tree tip-over — a wind a fir rooted in glacial till would shrug off lays a valley-floor tree flat, root plate and all, lifting a slab of asphalt on the upwind side. The crown gives no warning first. On a site with trucks and forklifts moving through it, that is the difference between an inconvenience and something much worse.

Black Cottonwood Writes Most of These Calls

Cottonwood is the default big tree of the Green and Duwamish corridor — along the river, up Gilliam Creek, on the levee edges and around the older commercial margins. It grows fast, gets very tall, and is more brittle than its size suggests. Included bark at the big unions is common, and it will throw a heavy lateral limb in hot, still weather with no wind involved. Wet ground at the base means decay starts early and low, where you cannot see it.

Red alder and willow fill the wet edges and are shorter-lived still. A cottonwood over a truck lane or a row of parked trailers is the standard Tukwila removal, and usually a crane job — not because the tree is hard to cut, but because there is nowhere on the property to lay it down.

River, Levee and Habitat Ground

Parcels along the Green and Duwamish sit inside shoreline jurisdiction, with critical-area and fish habitat rules layered on top, and levee vegetation is generally managed by flood control interests rather than the adjacent owner. What applies differs by jurisdiction and changes, so verify with the City of Tukwila and King County for your parcel before anyone quotes it. A contractor who calls a big river-bank cottonwood a straightforward removal has not looked it up.
