Our shop is in Kelso, roughly six hours west of the dam, so we are not the outfit to call about a broken limb on a Saturday afternoon. What brings us across the Cascades is difficulty and volume: several large removals booked together, crane work on trees nobody can drop, and contracted jobs for agencies, schools and commercial property.

Planted Fast, and Now Past Their Time

The towns above and below the dam went up in a hurry, and the planting followed the housing — species that would throw shade inside a decade. Siberian elm, silver maple, black locust, green ash and rows of Lombardy poplar all do that. What they do next is the problem. Every one is brittle, most carry included bark at the major forks, and a poplar row planted as a windbreak reaches the end of its life all at once, tree after tree along the same line.

That is why what we get asked about here is usually not one tree but a group — a hedgerow, a street frontage, a shelterbelt behind a shop building. Done one at a time as each lets go, work like that drags on for years. Done as one project, it is a few days.

Shallow Roots, Hard Ground, and a Coulee That Funnels Wind

Roots here stay where the water is, and the water is the top foot or so of irrigated lawn sitting on thin soil over basalt. A sixty-foot silver maple on a shallow, sprinkler-fed root plate is not anchored the way the same tree would be in deep river-valley ground. Then the coulee does what a coulee does: it takes wind off the plateau and squeezes it into a corridor. Gusts coming across Banks Lake and down through town load those wide brittle crowns hard from one side.

The other pattern out here is what happens when the water stops. A place changes hands, the sprinklers go off, and within two or three summers the biggest tree on the lot is thinning at the top and dropping deadwood over the driveway. Owners read that as disease. Usually it is drought on a tree that never had a chance to root for one.

Find Out Who Owns the Ground Before You Cut

Jurisdiction here is more complicated than a city tree code. Much of the shoreline and the ground around the project is federally managed, the Colville Reservation begins across the river, and each incorporated town handles its own right-of-way. Whether a tree is yours to remove can depend on which of those you are standing on. These rules differ and they change, so confirm for your parcel before anyone puts a saw in it.
