The Columbia is still tidal this far up, but it is far enough from the mouth that salt is not the thing driving tree behavior. What drives it here is water that never entirely leaves — fog sitting in the sloughs, north-facing slopes that stay damp through August, and a long, mild growing season on top of it.

The Fog Belt Grows Big Trees and Rots Them Quickly

Trees get large fast on this ground. They also carry a load nobody counts. Moss and licorice fern pack onto bigleaf maple limbs and hold water year-round, and decay fungi work through a wound here noticeably faster than they do fifty miles inland. A limb tear or a bad pruning cut that would seal over in drier country turns into a cavity in this climate.

So the first question on an old maple or a big cedar along the river is not how it looks from the driveway, it is what the wet has already done inside it. Fruiting bodies at the base, a hollow note when you sound the trunk, a limb union holding a bucket of duff — those matter more than lean here. The species mix along the river is spruce, hemlock, redcedar and a great deal of red alder, with Douglas-fir up on the drier shoulders and cottonwood and willow on anything low and wet.

The Ground Moves Before the Tree Does

The hills behind Highway 4 are old, deeply weathered rock with heavy clay soils over the top, and they are steep. After a long wet stretch that combination slumps. Cut a driveway or a house bench into one of those slopes and you have changed the way water moves through it, usually more than the excavator operator intended.

The tell is in the trunks. Trees on creeping ground come up with a curve at the butt, because the seedling kept correcting upward while the soil crept downhill underneath it. A hillside of pistol-butted alder above a house is telling you about the slope, not just about the trees. That changes what we recommend, and it changes how a removal gets rigged, because anchor points on moving ground are not as solid as they look.

Dikes, Sloughs and Roots Where They Cause Trouble

Puget Island and the flats along the Grays and Deep rivers are farmed behind dikes and drained by ditches and tide gates. Cottonwood and willow love exactly that ground, and they are the two worst species to have growing on a levee or hard against a drainage ditch: big, fast, brittle, and rooting straight into the structure that is keeping water out of a pasture. When one of them goes over on a dike crown it takes soil with it.

Down there the removal is often the easy part and the access is the hard part. Soft bottomland will not carry a loaded chip truck without mats, dike crowns are narrow, and a good many driveways are long and single-lane. Work on or near a dike, a tide gate or the shoreline can also involve the county, a diking district and state shoreline rules at once, and the riparian ground around the Julia Butler Hansen refuge adds habitat considerations.
