Tree Service in Ilwaco, WA

Ilwaco is where the peninsula stops being sand and starts being hill. The town stacks up a slope above the port, second-growth spruce and hemlock come down to the back fences, and the weather arrives over the Columbia bar with the whole ocean behind it.

Ask anyone here which way the weather comes from and they point at the bar. Southwest gales come off open ocean, strike the headland at Cape Disappointment, and spill over town in gusts that change direction on the way down the hill. Trees loaded like that fail differently than trees in steady wind.

The Timber Behind Town Is Part of Your Yard Whether You Own It or Not

Ilwaco is a few dozen streets with second-growth forest starting at the back fence, so half the trees that worry people here sit past the property line, in timber nobody has touched since it grew back. The ones that matter are the edge trees: when a lot was cleared decades ago, the stand behind it became a wall with an exposed face, and those trunks have carried wind they never grew wood for ever since.

Spruce Holds, Hemlock Rots, and the Moss Weighs More Than You Think

Sitka spruce gets genuinely large behind Ilwaco, where there is real soil over marine sediment instead of dune sand. It anchors well and takes salt better than anything we handle, but when one lets go it lifts a root plate the size of a garage floor. Hemlock is what we watch harder: it seeds into everything, tolerates shade, and in ground that never dries it picks up butt decay. Look low for conks and a stem swelling at the base.

Crowns here also hold moss, licorice fern and years of trapped needles, and after a week of rain all of it is soaked. A saturated crown in a gust is not the tree you looked at in July.

The Streets Were Platted for Cannery Workers, Not Chip Trucks

The old part of town is tight — short lots, houses close together, service drops crossing back yards, and hillside sections where a truck cannot get within a hundred feet. Some removals here come down in small pieces on rope and get carried out by hand. Where the truck sits and how far the brush travels affects the price more than trunk diameter does, which is why we walk it first.

Getting a View Back Off the Hill

Houses above the port look over the marina, Baker Bay and the river mouth, and spruce in this climate closes that down a foot at a time. Reduction and windowing, taken in stages, reopens the corridor while leaving the tree wind-firm. Topping does the reverse: it invites decay into the cuts and pushes out weakly attached regrowth where the gusts are hardest.

  • Hazard spruce and hemlock over houses on the slope above the port
  • Getting storm-thrown trees off roofs, decks and outbuildings, documented for the claim
  • Deadwooding and crown cleaning on wind-battered trees still worth keeping
  • Windowing and crown reduction to reopen bay and river views
  • Cutting salmonberry, salal and alder regrowth off building sites and drainfields
  • Stump grinding on town lots where the machine must fit through a gate

The rest is scheduled. Coast jobs go on the calendar as full days rather than single stops, so expect more lead time than a job at home, and the estimate and the work on separate trips. If you need one small pruning job finished Thursday, somebody on the peninsula will beat us on speed and price. Estimates are free and done standing on your property, and we are licensed and insured.

Ilwaco Tree Service Questions

  • Yes, and we will be straight about what that looks like. Ilwaco is roughly two hours out, so it is never a same-afternoon call. Work here gets scheduled rather than squeezed in, and the more you can tell us up front — every tree on the property, anything a neighbor wants looked at — the better the trip works for both of us. Fantastic local business! Ryan is quick, professional and very easy to work with. Would definitely use again. We now have views of the river and Lewis and Clark bridge right out our back door. 10/10 recommend!

Ryan was so fantastic! We had a large pine branch fall on top of our house that was lodged into the roof. After calling a few other services who were not very helpful we got ahold of Columbia Tree Prof. He answered right away and was very kind and helpful! He knew exactly what to do to help us and he was able to remove the branch within the hour! We are so thankful for his help and his generosity! We have two trees on our property that will need to be removed and we will definitely be giving our business to this company! Local, Efficient, professional, knowledgeable, Skilled. Can’t go wrong!

Mr Norris removed a huge fir tree inches away from my house in one day just as he promised. If you have a hazardous tree requiring fancy rope work and want a professional this tree service is the right pick. Really funny guy, he became a good friend and his pricing beat everyone else by a lot. Do yourself a favor and give him a call
