Tree Service in Newcastle, WA
Newcastle is a hillside town sitting on top of an old coal field, and both halves of that matter to the trees standing on it. We are a Kelso company about two and a half hours south, so what brings us up here is scale: steep-lot removals, crane work, and clearing where the ground itself is the hard part.

The steep west face under Cougar Mountain is the reason we get Newcastle calls at all. A hillside of second-growth fir standing over houses stepped into that slope in the nineties is a scope worth moving a crew and equipment for, and it is the only honest reason a Kelso company belongs on this page.
Our shop is on Mt Pleasant Road, two and a half hours south. That rules things out. We are not the truck that reaches you at nine on a Saturday night, and we will not beat an east-side company on a one-tree quote. Say so on the phone and we will point you somewhere closer.
Ground That Was Mined Before It Was Platted
Newcastle was a coal town long before it was a city. The slope above Coal Creek was worked underground for decades, and the forest that grew back across Cougar Mountain came up over disturbed ground — spoil, old grades, benched haul roads and fill. That history is still under the root plates. A tree anchored in loose spoil does not hold a slope the way one rooted into undisturbed till does, and the difference shows itself the first winter a saturated hillside meets a hard southwesterly.
Most of what is here now went in as engineered plats cut and filled into that west-facing hillside, with the tallest firs at the back of each lot left standing for screening. Those trees were grown inside a closed stand: crown pushed into the top quarter, thin stem, very little taper. Then the stand around them was removed. They are the ones that surprise people.
The View Is Behind Half of Our Newcastle Calls
People paid for the water and mountain sightlines off this hillside, and thirty years of growth closes a view corridor a foot at a time. Reopening it has real limits. Windowing, reduction back to appropriate laterals, and removing the two or three trees genuinely standing in the way are all fair game. Topping a fir on an exposed slope is not — you trade the view for a decayed, sprout-heavy top and buy the removal a decade later.
Read the Plat Before Anyone Starts a Saw
Plenty of lots here carry recorded native growth protection easements, sensitive-area tracts or geologically hazardous area designations along the back property line, and owners often find out only when a neighbor asks. Steep-slope clearing and grading gets looked at too. These rules differ by jurisdiction and they change, so pull your plat and confirm what applies to your parcel with the City of Newcastle before committing to a removal with anyone — us included.
What Actually Justifies the Drive
- Taking a stand of firs off a steep view lot rather than one tree per year
- Crane-assisted removals where the drop zone is a deck, a pool or the house next door
- Clearing a hillside parcel or an overgrown back tract before construction starts
- Contracted work for builders, boards and managers with more than one address on the list
- Written tree risk assessments where an owner needs documentation, not a sales pitch
For any of it, somebody walks the property before a number gets attached to it. If the drive does not add up for what you need, you will hear that on the call rather than after the estimate.
