Start with the part most companies bury. There are competent tree crews all over the Eastside, and for a normal Sammamish job one of them should get your money. Our gate is in Kelso, with three hours of freeway between it and your driveway, and that disqualifies us from anything urgent, anything small, and anything you want handled this week.

It does not disqualify us from work measured in days rather than hours. Greenbelt tracts, stands instead of single trees, a crane reaching over a roofline for four straight days — on those, travel is a line item rather than the deciding one.

The Plateau Kept Its Forest, But Only in Strips

Sammamish sits three to five hundred feet above the lake on a plateau that was logged, replanted, and then subdivided. When the plats went in, developers held back bands of second-growth Douglas fir and western hemlock along the streets and around the wetland buffers. Those trees grew up inside a closed stand: tall, straight, almost no stem taper, and a crown only in the top fifth of the tree, because a stand that dense means every tree is sheltered by its neighbors.

Cut that stand down to a sixty-foot strip and every tree on the new edge is carrying a wind load it never grew wood for. That is the failure we see most on plateau ground, and it is rarely a sick tree. It is a healthy one that was never built to stand alone. Hemlock is the worst of it, shallow-rooted over hardpan and inclined to snap partway up the stem rather than tip over cleanly.

Winter Arrives Here Before It Arrives in the Lowlands

Elevation matters more than people expect. When Bellevue and Seattle are getting cold rain, the high ground around Beaver Lake and Trossachs can be getting wet snow, and wet snow loading a fir crown that already leans out over a roofline is how tops come out. Ice does the same to the birch and ornamental maples planted along nearly every one of these streets.

Add the east wind that pushes out of the Snoqualmie gap in a cold snap and you get loading from a direction most of these trees have never been tested from, which is exactly the direction that finds the untested side of an edge tree.

Native Growth Areas, Wetland Buffers and the Association

Nearly every Sammamish subdivision came with strings attached. Native growth protection tracts, buffers on the streams feeding the lake, and an association with its own say over what is allowed to come down. Those requirements differ by plat and by parcel, and they change. Before anybody quotes you, confirm what applies to your address with the City of Sammamish and read your own covenants. A contractor who waves that question away is not doing you a favor.
