The first thing to understand about a tree on Mercer Island is that the decision to remove it is rarely yours alone. The city looks at removal on private property far more closely than most of Washington, generally wants documentation behind it, and cares about what goes back in the ground afterward. So removal is not automatically the safe choice. Roots on a marginal slope are doing structural work, and pulling a mature conifer off the hill above a lakefront house can be exactly the wrong move — and can drag geotechnical review into a job that started as a Saturday phone call. A tree leaning over a roof is one problem. A tree leaning over a roof on ground that already creeps is another, and the two should not get the same answer.

Dead-Topped Cedars Are Not Automatically Removals

Western red cedar across the Puget lowland has been flagging and dying back at the top after a run of dry summers, and this island has a great deal of cedar. Owners see brown in the crown and assume the tree is finished. Often it is shedding what it can no longer keep supplied with water and will hold the rest for years. Sometimes it really is done. Telling those apart means climbing it, or at least standing under it with no incentive to oversell.

Access Is Most of the Job Here

Lots are tight, houses are large, and the trees worth worrying about stand behind them. On a lakefront lot the back yard is a stair and a bulkhead, so there is no walking a chipper or a lift to the tree. What works is a crane set in the street or on a driveway apron, picking over the roofline — and setting that crane is most of the planning. Shared private lanes, low service drops, and neighbors parked where the mats need to go.
