Our shop is on Mt Pleasant Road in Kelso, roughly three hours south of Main Street once the Everett stretch has had its say. There is no truck of ours parked in Snohomish County, no yard here, and nobody on call. Everything else on this page is written on top of that.

What survives the drive is scope. Several acres of cottonwood and alder coming down together, a stand cleared before a shop or an arena goes in, a crane day on a property where the trees are bigger than a two-man outfit wants to touch — that work prices on difficulty and runs for days, so the mileage stops mattering. One tree in town prices by the mile, and you would be paying for our windshield time.

Cottonwood Sets the Rules in This Valley

Black cottonwood is the tallest hardwood in the Pacific Northwest and the one we handle with the most caution. It grows fast, lays down weak wood, carries decay in the trunk while the crown still looks fine, and drops full-size limbs in dead calm summer air. Along the Skykomish bottoms and out through the Tualco valley it grows in ranks — and people have since built barns, shops, fence lines and paddocks underneath it.

Red alder does a shorter version of the same thing. It takes over every wet cleared edge out here, tops out in a few decades, then starts shedding and tipping all at once. Clear a fence line, let alder come back, and you are on a clock whether anyone told you or not. Neither species is a problem on open ground. Both become one the day something gets built under them.

The Wind Here Arrives From the Wrong Side

Most of western Washington takes its weather from the southwest, and trees grow accordingly, putting root mass and reaction wood where the load usually comes from. Monroe sits at the mouth of a mountain valley. In winter, cold air drains down off the Cascades and out the US 2 corridor as a hard east wind, and it hits the side of the tree that was never braced for it, often while the ground is fully saturated.

That is the mechanism behind a lot of what we get asked about in the Sky Valley, and it is the reason fifty years of standing upright proves less here than people assume.

Acreage Work, Not Yard Work

• Clearing acres of cottonwood, alder and blackberry before a shop, barn or arena goes in

River Ground Comes With Its Own Rulebook

A parcel along the Skykomish, the Snoqualmie or one of the sloughs can sit inside shoreline jurisdiction, a critical-area buffer or a floodplain designation, and what is allowed differs between the City of Monroe and unincorporated Snohomish County. Working farm ground carries its own considerations again. These rules get revised, so confirm what applies to your exact parcel with the city or the county before money changes hands with any contractor, ours included.
