Start with the mileage, because it decides most of what follows. Our shop is on Mt Pleasant Road in Kelso, down in Cowlitz County, a little over three hours from the lake. We have no yard here, no truck parked nearby and nobody on call in Snohomish County.

What survives that distance is complexity. A crane set in the street, a full day of rigging over a roof, four or five trees handled as one project — jobs priced by difficulty rather than by the mile, where the drive is a rounding error and the alternative is a smaller outfit turning the property down. Everything simpler than that belongs to a company in town.

The lake sits in a basin the glaciers left behind, and the ground around it is the same story you get across this whole stretch of Snohomish County: a workable layer of soil sitting on dense till that water will not pass through. Rain moves sideways along that boundary and comes out of the cut banks behind lakefront houses all winter.

Trees on that ground root shallow and wide because there is nowhere else to go. Then there is the fetch. A long open reach of water gives a southerly wind an uninterrupted run at the north and east shores, and a Douglas fir standing at the top of a saturated bank with a full sail of crown is carrying a load that the same tree three streets inland never feels. That is the failure mode we see repeatedly on lakes like this one, and it is why the trees that come down are so often the big healthy-looking ones.

The Access Constraint Is the Whole Job

On a lakefront lot the usual sequence does not apply. There is no drop zone, no path wide enough for a chip truck to reach the water side, and a bank too steep to walk brush up. Everything comes off in pieces on a rope or on a crane hook, over a roof, and lands in the only staging area available — the street out front. Neighbors are close on both sides and the utility drop usually runs right through the work.

Where the crane can legally set up, what it can reach, and whether the street will take the outriggers are questions that decide the price. Ryan walks the property himself before a number gets written down, on this kind of work more than any other.

If you want one branch taken out of a window, call someone in town. What we take on is the larger version: a corridor reopened through a screen of conifers over multiple days, with reduction and windowing done in the right places instead of topping. Topping a fir on a wet lakeside bank does not solve a view problem — it builds you a hazard tree and a bill for it in about eight years.

Same goes for documentation. If an owner or an association needs a written risk assessment on a row of trees above a bank, that is real work worth travelling for. A single opinion on a single tree is not, and we will point you to someone closer.
