Duvall climbs. Hemlock Is the Quiet One

Douglas fir gets the attention around here, but on the shaded lower slopes and down in the ravines it is western hemlock that surprises people. It roots shallow, tolerates crowding, and carries a dense fine-twigged crown that catches wind like a sail. It is also the species most likely to be holding root decay while looking perfectly green from the driveway, and it dies from the top down, which reads as drought stress right up until a stem section comes out of the canopy on a still day.

The Trees the Plats Kept Are on the Worst Ground

Duvall subdivisions from the nineties and two-thousands preserved trees, which sounds like good news until you notice where. The tracts that got kept are the ravines, the swales and the slope edges: the ground nobody could build on. That is also the ground with the shallowest anchorage, the wettest soil and the most exposure, and it usually belongs to the homeowners association rather than to the family whose fence backs onto it.

So it becomes a liability with nobody walking it.
