Snow Load Breaks Crowns, Not Root Plates

Wet snow builds on a conifer from the top down and it does not shed the way people assume. A bare-limbed maple sheds most of it. A dense Douglas fir, and western red cedar in particular, holds it — those flat sprays of cedar foliage catch snow like shelves. Limbs bend, hold, bend further, and then fail at the collar. Tops break out where the stem tapers down and can no longer carry what is sitting on it. What we find the morning after is not a tree tipped over with its roots in the air. It is limbs across the drive and a broken top hung up forty feet in the neighbor tree.

Those hangers are the actual danger. A broken top resting in another crown holds a great deal of stored energy in a direction nobody can predict, and it comes down when the wind changes or the ice lets go rather than when you are ready. A ladder and a pole saw is the worst possible way to negotiate with one.

East Wind Off the Gorge Loads a Tree From the Wrong Side

The other winter event up here comes out of the Columbia Gorge. Cold air pours west through the gap and the ridges above Camas and Washougal take it head on, and it is a genuinely different load than a Pacific storm. A fir that has spent forty years bracing against southwesterlies has built its reaction wood on the side that faces the usual weather. An east wind pushes on the side it never had to defend.

It also tends to show up with freezing rain riding along, so trees are already carrying ice on every twig when the wind starts working on them. That combination is what takes down trees which came through every fall storm without losing so much as a cone. If you have a big conifer within reach of the house and its exposure is to the east, that is the one worth having looked at before winter rather than during it.

A Parcel That Touches Timberland Needs a Fuel Plan Too

Ground up here runs straight into state and industrial forest, and by August the east side of this county dries out in a way the flats near the river never quite do. Fuel reduction on a wooded acreage is not clearing your property, and we are not going to sell it to you that way. It is picking the specific fuels that turn a ground fire into a crown fire.

• Pruning the dead lower limbs that act as a ladder from the forest floor into a live crown
• Thinning the thick regeneration that came in after the last cut and is now standing shoulder to shoulder
• Pulling deadfall, cured brush and blackberry off the ground closest to the house and outbuildings
• Opening the driveway corridor so a fire engine can get up it and you can get down it at the same time
• Getting fir needles and duff out from under decks, off roofs and away from the propane tank

The driveway one gets skipped and it should not. On a long private drive with timber on both sides, overhanging limbs and a turnaround that will not fit an engine are the difference between a crew coming up to your house and a crew deciding not to.
