Nobody calls a tree service about a tree that is doing fine, which is a shame, because a tree that is doing fine is the only kind you can fix cheaply. A good share of the expensive removals we do started as a five-minute decision somebody did not make twenty years earlier.

The Cheapest Cut Is the One Made at Fifteen Feet

On a young tree, correcting a problem is one cut with a handsaw from the ground. The same problem at seventy feet is a climber, a rigging plan and sometimes a crane parked out on the street. Nothing about the defect changed except its size. On a tree still in its first thirty years we are looking for a second leader competing with the main one, limbs already aimed at the roofline, the lowest scaffold sitting where the mower has to duck, and a stake or a tie nobody removed after planting.

None of that is urgent, which is exactly why it never gets done. If you have young trees on the property, the honest advice is to have somebody look at them once, make the two or three cuts that matter, and then leave them alone for a decade.

What Goes Back in the Hole Matters More Than What Came Out

Removals out here are usually followed by a trip to the nursery, and that is where the next problem tends to get planted. Two things go wrong. The first is mature size — a conifer put in fifteen feet off a foundation is a removal with a thirty-year fuse, and the person who pays for it is rarely the person who planted it. The second is winter water. Ground on this side of town holds moisture long after the rain stops, and species that want a dry summer root run will sulk in it, thin out and decline, however good they looked in the pot.

So we would rather talk about setback from the house, the drive and the overhead line before we talk about species, and say plainly when the spot you have picked is only big enough for something small. Better conversation to have before the hole is dug than after.

The Row Along the Ditch Is Probably Not Yours

Out toward the diked ground the tree lines follow water rather than property. Cottonwood and willow along a ditch bank, a drainage easement or the levee itself are frequently standing on ground a district manages, not on the lot whose lawn ends at it. We establish who owns a tree before anybody quotes it, and we do not cut without written permission from whoever that turns out to be. What is allowed near a levee, a ditch or a shoreline differs by parcel and changes over time, so it is worth confirming for your own address instead of assuming your neighbor’s answer applies.

Cabling Is Not a Failure to Commit

Some mature trees out here are worth keeping and are not sound as they stand. A long limb reaching over the roof can be shortened back to a live lateral so it carries less leverage. Two stems working against each other at a weak union can be tied together with a cable set high in the crown. Neither is a permanent fix, both want checking every few years, and both usually cost a fraction of losing a sixty-year-old tree and starting over.

We are ten minutes out, so nothing past the city limits carries a travel charge. The estimate is a walk around the yard, it costs nothing, and storm calls here get answered outside business hours.
