Second-growth Douglas fir that grew in a closed stand puts its energy into height, not girth. Sheltered on all sides, it never develops the trunk taper or the wide, buttressed root spread that an open-grown tree builds by necessity. Then a house pad gets cleared, and overnight the trees along that new edge become the front rank. They are carrying full wind load on a frame that was built for none of it.

The first few winters after any clearing are the risky ones, and on rolling ground the wind does not come from where you expect. It rolls over the ridge and drops into the valley, so the exposed side of your clearing may not be the side facing the weather. Removal is not always the answer either.
