The run east along SR 14 does something in twenty miles that normally takes a couple hundred: the forest thins, moss comes off the trunks, and oak and pine take over from hemlock and cedar. Underwood sits in that seam, on the benches above the mouth of the White Salmon, and does not behave like the west end of the county.

Wind works from both ends of the year here — a hard dry east flow in winter, and a steady summer westerly off the river that most of Washington never sees. Trees that grew in the open handle it. The ones that concern us grew up sheltered behind a fir block, a barn or a windbreak, and then lost it.

Oregon White Oak Is the Tree People Get Wrong

Oak here is slow, tough and long-lived, and it fails in ways nobody expects from a strong tree. It holds big limbs nearly horizontal far out from the trunk, and decay works inward from old cuts and tight crotches for decades before anything shows outside. What catches people is a heavy limb letting go on a still, hot afternoon with no wind in it at all.

Competition is the other oak problem. Many grew up in open ground and have since been shaded by Douglas fir that moved in once fire stopped running through. The oak thins from the top down while the fir beside it looks healthy. Releasing an oak has to be staged — pull all the fir at once and you hand a shaded, sparse-crowned oak straight to the sun and wind.

Summer here actually dries out, and the fuel runs continuous: oak leaf litter, ponderosa needle cast, conifer limbs low enough to carry fire into a crown, and blackberry and broom filling old orchard edges and fence lines. Fuel work here usually looks like this.

• Limbing conifers up to break the ladder from ground fuel to crown
• Thinning dense fir regrowth in the draws, leaving the oak and the larger pine
• Pulling brush, broom and blackberry back off structures, tanks and driveways
• Removing standing dead and beetle-killed pine before it is hazard as well as fuel
• Opening a one-lane driveway so a truck can get in and back out

Being straight about it: none of this makes a house fireproof, and anyone saying otherwise is selling something. It reduces exposure and buys time, and works best as one piece of a plan you have thought through with your insurer and fire district.

Orchard Benches, Windbreaks and Buried Line

Most of what we do on Underwood Mountain is not the fruit trees. It is the boundary trees and old windbreak rows — Lombardy poplar planted decades back and now dropping whole leaders, and big firs at a block edge throwing tops into trellis and deer fence.

Two things shape those jobs. Buried line runs all through ground that looks empty — mainline, drip, wire — so machine routes get planned rather than improvised. And orchard roads are one lane with a drop on the outside, which decides what we bring up and where a chip truck turns around.
