Tree Service in North Bonneville, WA
North Bonneville is not standing where it was built. The town was moved inland when the second powerhouse went in at Bonneville Dam, which is why nearly every yard tree in it is roughly the same age and reaching the same problems in the same decade.

Most towns build their canopy in layers over a century. This one did not. When the second powerhouse went in at Bonneville Dam the old townsite was condemned and the community was rebuilt from scratch a short way inland — new streets, new lots, and a landscape planted almost all at once.
That one fact explains a good share of what we get called out for. The block you live on runs one clock, so when a plum splits or a spruce starts dropping limbs it is usually not bad luck. It is a schedule.
Yard Trees That All Went In the Same Season
The planting list of that era reads straight off the street: flowering plum and cherry, birch in threes, silver maple, a blue spruce set eight feet off a foundation because it was three feet tall then, and arborvitae runs that have closed into walls. Plums and cherries are short-lived and well into the end of it. Birch thins from the top down and does it quietly. Silver maple holds weak unions and sheds limbs under wet snow. The spruce is a siding and gutter problem now, not a landscape feature.
None of that adds up to a street full of removals. Plenty have years left with the right pruning and some honesty about the ones that do not. It does mean that if you live on that block, look at all of them together rather than one crisis at a time.
The Ground Under Town Is Old Landslide
This stretch of the north bank sits on debris from the enormous slide that came off Table Mountain and once dammed the Columbia. You read it in the ground — low hummocks, closed depressions that never drain, ponds and slough between knolls, and basalt boulders wherever you dig. Trees answer that by rooting shallow and wide, spreading a plate instead of driving down.
So failures sort by microsite. A fir at the margin of one of those wet depressions tips whole, root plate and all, after a long soak. The same species on a dry hummock keeps its footing and comes apart in the crown instead. It also makes stump grinding unpredictable here — the wheel finds rock far more often than it does at home.
Weather Comes Through the Gap, Not Over It
This is the wet end of the Gorge and the narrow end of it, so winter weather gets funneled rather than absorbed. Cold air draining west out of the interior meets Pacific moisture right about here, which is why glaze and heavy wet loading matter more in this stretch than raw wind speed. Conifers carry that load until a top or one whole side lets go. Alder on wet ground simply lies down and stays.
Federal and State Ground on Three Sides
Very little of what surrounds this town is ordinary private property. Corps of Engineers ground around the dam, transmission corridor and switchyard land, state park at Beacon Rock, national forest above all of it — and the whole area sits inside the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. The lines out here are nothing like a service drop behind a house in town, and nothing near them is a homeowner call or ours. Rules differ by jurisdiction and they change, so we work out what attaches to your parcel and who signs off before anything gets scheduled.
