Why a Healthy Fir Here Lifts the Lawn When It Goes

Roots that meet rock or cemented hardpan stop going down and start going out. A big fir on this bench can be entirely healthy and still be standing on something closer to a dinner plate than a taproot: wide, strong in its own way, and shallow. Right up until the ground is fully saturated, that is plenty.

When it does let go, the failure has a signature. The tree does not snap partway up. It rotates out of the ground and the whole plate comes with it, tipping up a slab of lawn, a run of fence and sometimes the edge of a driveway. Cleanup is half the job — there is a hole to fill and a great deal of soil hanging in a root mass that has to come off before any of it gets hauled.

A Trench on the Uphill Side Is a Removal You Pay For Later

This is the part people find out too late. Shallow ground means the root system is spread wide and sits close to the surface, so a water line, a septic run, a footing or a new driveway cut across the uphill side of a tree takes a far larger share of it than the same trench would in valley soil. The tree looks unchanged for two or three seasons.

Then the top starts thinning, or it comes over in a wind that should not have moved it. If you have excavation coming up, it costs nothing to have us look at what is in the path first. Sometimes we route around it, sometimes we prune ahead of the work, and sometimes the tree comes out now, on your schedule instead of the weather’s.

Worth saying before the machine comes off the trailer: on a lot of Rocky Point ground a grinder reaches rock or hardpan well short of the depth it would reach on a flat Longview lot, and no amount of horsepower changes that. Pushing harder just means broken teeth and a bill nobody planned for.

So we look at the stump, tell you what depth is realistic in that spot, and what it means for whatever you want to do next. Grass over the top is usually fine. Planting a replacement tree in the exact same hole often is not, and there is normally a better spot a few feet over. You hear that at the estimate, not afterward.

On a fair number of these properties the natural drop zone overlaps the travel lane, which makes the removal partly a traffic problem. We plan where the chipper sits, where wood gets decked, who is watching the corner, and occasionally what time we start so that we are not the reason your neighbors are late.
