Ask anyone who has lived on this hill through a February. When the forecast for Kelso says rain and the temperature on the valley floor sits a couple of degrees above freezing, the top of the grade gets the wet, heavy stuff instead — or worse, freezing rain that glazes every twig before the wind arrives.

A Few Hundred Feet of Elevation Changes What the Weather Does

Wet snow is the most underrated load a tree in southwest Washington ever carries. It is heavy, it clings to needles and evergreen foliage, and it keeps accumulating on a windless night with nothing to shake it off. The species that suffer are not usually the big Douglas firs — those shed a load reasonably well. It is the dense, multi-stemmed evergreens and the long horizontal limbs on bigleaf maple that fail.

Freezing rain is worse and less forgiving. Ice loads everything evenly, including the small stuff at the ends of limbs where a tree has the least leverage. What we clean up afterward on this hill is rarely a whole tree on the ground. It is half a maple canopy across a fence, a cedar leader hinged over and hanging, and hedges laid flat in three directions.

Most of the Big Conifers Up Here Were Planted by Somebody

This is not second growth that got left standing. Drive the hill and you can read the planting decisions of the last fifty years: a pair of blue spruce flanking a front walk, a deodar cedar that was a six-foot nursery tree when the house was new, arborvitae put in as a four-foot privacy screen and never touched again. All of them were the right size for about a decade.

The problem is not that these are bad trees. It is that they were placed by someone imagining the nursery tag, not the mature tree. A cedar planted eight feet off a foundation is a removal conversation thirty years later no matter how healthy it is, and an arborvitae hedge that has never been reduced becomes a row of leggy, top-heavy stems that peel apart the first time real snow sits on them.

• Bigleaf maple splitting at a codominant union over a fence or shop
• Ornamental conifers planted too close to a foundation, deck or septic line
• Birch clumps in decline with dead tops over a driveway
• Hazard removals where a leaning fir has a house on the downhill side
• Stump grinding so a hedge line or lawn can be replanted properly

When the Tree Straddles a Property Line

Lots up here are big enough that the trees along a boundary get large, and small enough that those trees matter to two households at once. A fair number of our estimates on Pleasant Hill turn into a conversation about whose tree it actually is, who is paying, and what happens to the part that hangs over the line.

We are tree people, not attorneys, and we will not tell you what the law entitles you to. What we will do is give both sides the same straight read on the tree: whether it is genuinely defective or just large, what a reduction would and would not accomplish, and what the failure would land on. That much usually settles the disagreement on its own. Where a tree is shared, we would rather have both owners standing there when we walk it, so nobody is hearing the plan secondhand.

One practical note. If a neighbor tree worries you, do something about it before the weather does, not after. Once a limb is down, the conversation gets a great deal more expensive and a great deal less friendly.
