Walk any older block here and you can pick out the trees that predate the houses. They are the ones with wide, low, spreading crowns instead of the tall narrow shape a forest-grown tree carries, and there are usually three or four rooflines sitting inside the drip line.

The Biggest Trees in Catlin Were Yard Trees Before the Yards Got Small

A Douglas fir or bigleaf maple that grew up in the open behaves nothing like one that came up in a stand. Open-grown trees put out heavy lateral limbs low on the stem, because nothing ever shaded them out. Decades later those limbs are the size of ordinary trees, reaching a long way from the trunk on unions that nothing tested until a house went up underneath.

This is why so much of the failure we see in Catlin is limb failure rather than whole-tree failure. The root plate is fine. The trunk is fine. A single horizontal limb reaching thirty feet over a garage is the whole problem, and it is often addressable with an end-weight reduction rather than a removal. Getting somebody in the tree to look at the union is worth more here than anything you can conclude from the ground.

No Drop Zone Means the Rigging Is the Whole Job

The lots here are small and the houses are close. On most Catlin removals there is no direction the tree can go: the house on one side, the neighbor fence on the other, a service drop overhead and a car in the driveway. Everything comes down in controlled pieces, lowered on rope, and where a piece is too big to handle that way we bring in a crane and lift it out over the roofline instead.

Roots Under Driveways, Sewer Laterals and Slab Foundations

The other half of an old yard tree is underground, and it causes more arguments than the canopy does. Roots follow water and air, which on a platted lot means loose backfill beside a foundation, the gap under a driveway slab, and any sewer lateral with a bad joint. A tree that looks like it is minding its own business can be lifting concrete on two properties.

We will give you the honest version rather than the one that sells a removal. Taking the tree out stops the roots growing, but it does not put your driveway back or repair a cracked lateral — that is a concrete and plumbing job either way. Sometimes the right answer is removal, sometimes it is cutting specific roots at a distance the tree can survive, and sometimes it is fixing the slab and leaving the tree alone.
