The call comes in a couple of times a year and it always sounds the same. A big Douglas fir went over. There was no wind to speak of. The crown was full and green right up until it moved, and the root ball that came up with it looks far too small for the tree — roots snapped off short, some of them stringy and separating into layers where they broke.

Laminated Root Rot Runs in Pockets Through These Hills

These hills were logged, replanted to Douglas fir, and in places logged and replanted again. The fungus behind laminated root rot survives in old stumps for decades and spreads by contact — root touching root — rather than through the air. That is why it never shows up as scattered dead trees across a property. It shows up as a pocket: an opening where the fir dropped out, filling in with alder and bracken, ringed by living firs with thin tops and a heavy crop of stress cones.

The failure mode is what matters. An infected fir does not die standing and give you a season of warning. It holds a green crown while the anchoring roots are eaten out from the center, then comes over intact, frequently in no wind at all. If your house, shop or driveway sits inside a pocket or just downhill of one, that outranks the apparent health of any single tree in it.

Seeps, Springs and Ground That Never Really Dries

The Coal Creek drainage runs water all winter and much of the summer. Springs break out of these hillsides where loose surface material meets the clay underneath, building sites were benched into that slope decades ago, and the ground below a seep stays soft long after the rest of the property has firmed up. Compromised roots plus saturated soil is a low bar for failure, which is why trees here come over in wind that would not budge the same tree on dry ground down in town.

It changes how we work, too. In March a chip truck will rut a wet bench that carries a machine without a mark in August, and a grinder has no business crossing a drain field. On a first visit we look at where water comes out of the hill about as hard as we look at the trees.

Alder and Bigleaf Maple Took the Ground the Fir Lost

The everyday removal in Eufaula is not the fir at all. It is the hardwoods that filled in behind the logging and crowded the wet draws. Red alder is short-lived; by the time a stand is fifty or sixty years old it is shedding tops, going punky at the butt, and standing precisely where somebody later put a driveway or a shop. Bigleaf maple lasts longer but builds heavy multi-stemmed forms with tight included unions that split under wet snow or a crown full of rain. Both are worth handling before they pick their own timing.
