Tree Service in Chehalis, WA
Somebody planted a lot of ambitious trees around the Chehalis hillside a century ago — sequoia, deodar cedar, walnut, horse chestnut — on lots that were never going to be big enough to hold them. A fair share of our work in this town is the bill coming due on that decision.

A giant sequoia on a fifty-foot lot is not a pruning problem. It is a rigging problem, a traffic problem and a disposal problem at once, and it is the most common conversation we have on the hillside above downtown Chehalis.
Those streets were laid out when a seedling looked like a good idea and a century of growth was somebody else’s problem. The trees now stand over old roofing, brick chimneys, rockeries and porches that cost real money to put back, in side yards you could not park a car in. Nothing there gets felled. It leaves the tree on a rope or a hook.
Old Ornamentals Fail in Ways the Native Trees Do Not
A hillside Douglas fir at least behaves predictably. The planted stock is stranger. Horse chestnut and walnut carry long, heavy, low limbs that tear out at the collar under wet snow. Deodar cedar sheds a whole scaffold limb off one side and stands there as though nothing happened. Sequoia hardly fails at all, which is its own problem: it keeps adding mass beside a foundation until every option left is expensive.
What we look at is where the defect sits relative to what you care about: a cavity on the far side of a trunk from your roof is a different risk than the same cavity facing it. Some of these trees have decades left with a reduction and some deadwooding. Some are past the point where pruning changes the ending.
Why the Crane Earns Its Keep on These Streets
Rigging a large tree down piece by piece on a tight hillside lot can take a crew most of a week, every chunk hand-carried to the street. Setting a crane in the road and picking the same tree out over the roofline is often faster, safer, and once you count the days no more expensive. It also keeps weight off a driveway laid before most of us were born.
It does not fit everywhere. Narrow streets, overhead services, parking on both sides and a slope with no level set-up have each ruled it out up there. That gets decided on site, standing in the road looking up, never over the phone.
Down on the Flat: the Airport, Chamber Way and the Creek Bottoms
Below the hill the town changes character. Around the airport and the commercial ground the parcels are large and low, and the trees are whatever tolerates wet feet: ash, alder and cottonwood along Dillenbaugh and Berwick creeks and through the Newaukum bottom. Red alder is the recurring problem — fast, full of heart rot before it looks old, and behind a lot of the leaning trees on back property lines.
The work is different too: sight lines over entrances, limbs over parking rows, brush swallowing a fence line, a dead alder leaning at the neighboring lot. Those price better when an owner or manager hands us the whole site in one walk.
How Chehalis Work Gets Scheduled
This is the closest Lewis County town to our shop, a straight run up I-5, and a real part of what we do rather than a page written for a search engine. It is still a scheduled trip, not a truck parked in town. Crane days book furthest out, since the machine and the street have to line up on one morning. Storm damage does not wait for that: call, say what is on the house, and it moves up the list.
