On the ridges you sit at the end of a long feeder running through timber, and restoration works outward from the substation. So the trees that matter most on your place are not the ones you look at from the kitchen window. They are the ones over the driveway and over the service drop. A tree across the drive during an outage is the difference between an uncomfortable evening and a bad week.

The maintenance worth doing ahead of winter is unglamorous. Open the driveway corridor wide and tall enough for a fire engine or a line truck. Keep alder and brush off the drop. Reduce end weight on limbs over the roof, pull deadwood and hangers out of the canopy, and deal with any union that has started to split. Late summer through fall is the window, and it costs far less than the cleanup version.
