Tree Service in Spirit Lake & the SR-504 Corridor, WA

The Spirit Lake Memorial Highway leaves Castle Rock and climbs the North Fork Toutle toward the mountain. The bottom of it is lived in — houses, pasture, small businesses, a visitor center or two. Above that, private residential ground thins out fast, and by the time you are into the blast zone the land belongs to a timber company, the state, or the Forest Service. Where you sit on that highway decides what can be done about a tree, and by whom.

Four Landowners Share This Highway

On most of the corridor the first question is not how to take a tree down. It is whose tree it is. Inside the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument the answer is the Forest Service, and no private contractor is cutting there. On tree farm ground below the monument it is the timber company, behind their gates and on their schedule. In the state highway right-of-way it is WSDOT. On your own parcel, or your business’s parcel, it is us.

We settle that before quoting rather than after, because cutting a tree that is not yours is a serious matter in Washington and a cheerful contractor with a saw is no defense at all. If the tree worrying you belongs to somebody else, we will tell you who to call and leave it there.

Dead Wood Is Only a Hazard If Something Is Under It

This corridor carries a great deal of standing dead wood — silvered snags left from 1980, and more added by every wind event since. Out in the backcountry that is habitat and should be left where it stands. The same stem over a driveway, a well house, a campsite or a shop roof is a hazard, and the difference is not the tree. It is what would be underneath when it finally lets go.

So on a property here we work outward from the targets instead of walking the woods tree by tree. What sits beneath it, how far can it actually reach, is anyone parked or sleeping in that spot, and does the piece most likely to release first weigh fifty pounds or five hundred. That is also the shape of a written risk assessment, which is worth having on file if you run anything the public visits.

What Grew Back Above Toutle

The forest along the upper corridor is planted rather than volunteer — noble fir and Douglas fir set out across ground that had been scoured or buried, in rows you can still read from the highway. Alder and willow claimed the wet deposits along the river on their own. What that leaves at the edges of the replant is a lot of even-height stems with narrow crowns and shallow purchase in young ground. It does not behave like an old forest and should not be treated as one.

A Closed Road Above Coldwater Changes the Day

Since the 2023 slide above Coldwater Lake, the upper highway has been shut to through traffic and the Spirit Lake outlet bridge went with it. Replacement work has been underway and the observatory beyond it has stayed closed, so check WSDOT for current status before planning a drive up there — this has moved more than once. For us it is a scheduling fact. On a mountain highway with limited turnarounds and a hard stop partway up, the day gets planned around the road as much as the tree, and in genuinely bad weather we would rather move a job than send a loaded truck up the grade.
