The creek sorts the trees for you here. Down in the wet draws and along the water it is red alder, willow and Oregon ash. Up on the rolling ground above, the mix turns to Douglas fir. Nearly every call we take out of Olequa comes off one side of that split or the other.

Red Alder Is the Clock Nobody Notices Running

Alder claims wet, disturbed ground within a few seasons, and there is a great deal of wet, disturbed ground here. It shoots up, closes canopy fast, and then it quits. Alder is short-lived by conifer standards, so a stand that went up together comes apart together — dead tops, stems snapped off after a wet snow, heart rot working up from old wounds while the bark still looks respectable.

The practical version: a screen of alder that looked tidy behind a shop twenty years ago is now a row of brittle stems taller than the building. Alder rarely tips over root plate and all. It breaks. The debris lands closer in than people expect, and a stem that reads as sound from the driveway can be carrying a rotten core.

Not a complaint about alder. It holds soil, feeds nitrogen back into it and hands the ground off to conifer. It only becomes our business when a stand ages out beside something you would rather keep.

A Tree on the Creek Bank Is a One-Sided Job

Anything standing on the edge of Olequa Creek gives up half its working room before a saw comes out. No rigging from the far side, no landing on the water, and whatever gets away from you ends up somewhere nobody wants to retrieve it. Bank trees come apart from the top with every piece lowered back toward the field — slower than felling, and priced that way.

The bank is the other half of it. High water moves dirt, and a creek that took a foot off a cut bank over one winter has uncovered the anchor roots of whatever stands above. The reason to look hard at a leaner is rarely the lean — it is the ground on the low side that has quietly stopped holding.
