The Limb Over the County Road Is Still Your Limb

The Damage Was Done When the House Went In

A tree that had an open field to itself for eighty years is not fragile. What breaks it is a building site. The pad gets cut and filled, a long driveway goes in over the root zone, a trench for water and power runs through it, and equipment parks in the shade all summer because that is where the shade is. None of it shows for years. Roots get severed on one side, soil compacts until water stops moving, and a foot of fill ends up against a trunk never built to be buried.

A decade later the tree starts telling on itself, and it reads as disease rather than history. What we are actually looking at on a Manor walk-around is usually this:
