The west bank is a different job from the hillside half of Kelso. Over here the ground is river silt, the water table sits close to the surface for most of the winter, and the neighborhood is kept dry by a levee rather than by elevation. That one fact decides which species thrive, how they fail, and what we can drive onto your property in February.

Cottonwood Country, and What That Costs You

Black cottonwood is the signature tree of the Cowlitz floodplain, and there is plenty of it in West Kelso — along the levee toe, on the back fence lines of the older lots, and in yards where somebody let a volunteer run for thirty years. It grows faster than anything else here, gets enormous, and carries that size in wood that is comparatively weak. Cottonwood is also the species most likely to shed a full limb on a still, hot July afternoon with no wind involved at all.

Red alder is the other one. Alder is short-lived, roots shallow in wet ground, and hollows out at the base while the crown above still looks fine. When we get called to a leaner over here in January, it is usually an alder, and the tell is a fresh crack in the soil on the upwind side of the trunk.

Soft Ground Cuts Both Ways

Saturated silt does two things at once. It weakens the grip a root plate has when a south wind runs up the valley — the river corridor gives that wind a clear approach and the flats have no ridge to break it — and it turns your yard into something a loaded chip truck will sink into.

So work here gets planned around the season as much as around the tree. In a wet stretch we mat the route, rig more, carry more, and keep the truck on the street. The same removal in August is straightforward. After a week of rain it takes longer, and we would rather tell you that at the estimate than cut ruts across your lawn and apologize afterward.

Stumps have their own wrinkle on the low lots. Grind deep enough and you can find standing water in the hole, and old fill from the flood years means concrete, brick and buried scrap turn up under the wheel more often than anyone would like.

Small Lots, Old Houses, Wires Through the Back

Most of West Kelso was built small and built close: modest houses, detached garages, narrow side yards, alleys behind, and PUD service drops threading through the exact backyards where the big trees are. Nobody back there has room to fell anything full length. It comes down in pieces on a rope, over a roof or a shed or a neighbor fence, and the brush walks out to the street by hand.
