Stand on the bridge in December and look at the trees along the water. Half of them are still green, and not one of them should be. That green is English ivy in the trunks and old man’s beard — the wild clematis that arrived as a garden plant and never left — thrown over the tops of the maples and cottonwoods in sheets you could nearly walk on.

The Vines Are Doing More Damage Here Than the Wind Is

A vine-loaded tree fails for reasons that have nothing to do with how healthy the tree is. Ivy adds weight in the crown the tree never grew wood to carry, and holds it year round instead of dropping it every autumn. It turns a bare winter canopy into a sail exactly when the wind is worst. Old man’s beard is worse in one way: it bridges tree to tree, so a whole row gets tied together and one failure drags its neighbors down.

Then there is what you cannot see. Ivy on a trunk covers the base, the root flare and the lower stem — precisely where the answers are. A cavity, a fruiting conk, a bark seam, carpenter ants working in and out: all of it hides under the ivy, and inspecting a fully sheathed trunk is close to worthless. We take the ivy off before we will say anything confident about the tree underneath it.

Cut the Band, Do Not Rip the Vine Down

The instinct is to grab the ivy and pull. Do not. Ripping mature ivy off a trunk takes bark and cambium with it, and on a thin-barked tree that is real damage. It is also slow, dangerous overhead work for very little gain, because the vine up in the crown is not what is keeping it alive.

1. Cut every stem at the base and again above shoulder height, and take the band right out
2. Pull the ground ivy back in a wide ring so it cannot reclimb next spring
3. Leave the severed vine in the crown alone — it dies in place and drops on its own
4. Come back once the canopy is bare and look at the trunk properly
5. Chase the clematis off the tree line and fence, because it reconnects fastest

It looks untidy for a year. That is the trade. Pulling dead vine out of a hundred-foot cottonwood costs several times what cutting the band costs and puts a climber in the worst possible place to be, and gravity does the same job for nothing.

Winter Is When You Can Finally See the Problem

From May to October the vines are invisible — everything is green and the canopy reads as one mass. Between leaf drop and bud break they are the only green left in the trees, and you can stand at the road and count which stems are carrying a load. That is the walk we would rather do with you, and it is the right season for the cutting too: the understory is down and the trunk is finally visible.

What We Will Not Pretend to Fix

The understory along this river carries more than ivy. Blackberry we cut and chip all day. Knotweed is a different animal — cutting or chipping can spread it from fragments rather than control it, so we will not take your money to brush-hog a patch and let you believe it is dealt with. Control there runs through county and conservation-district channels, and requirements differ by jurisdiction and change, so verify what applies to your parcel.

Same principle on the river side generally. Ground near the East Fork can sit inside shoreline or critical-area jurisdiction, and what you may cut is an address question rather than a neighborhood question. We check it before quoting and tell you plainly when the honest answer is that the county needs to hear from you first.
