Tree Service in Green River Valley, WA

Up the Green River you are a guest of the road. The valley is narrow and steep-sided, the road a shelf cut into the slope with the river below, and past the first few miles almost everything is somebody’s timber ground — units in every stage from replant to ready to cut.

We get called up this drainage for three things: something already down across a road or a building, something leaning that nobody wants to sleep under another week, and keeping a cabin or a well head from disappearing into the brush.

You Are Living Inside Somebody Else’s Rotation

This is production forest and it behaves like one. Units get cut, replanted, thinned and cut again, and each time the pattern changes the wind behaves differently around your place. A stand that sheltered your cabin for twenty years comes out over one summer, and the trees along your own line are suddenly the tallest thing on a new edge. They grew up braced by neighbors that are now stumps.

That is the most predictable hazard in this valley and the easiest to get ahead of. If harvest is going in above you, look hard at your boundary trees that year — crown shape, taper, how much of the stem has ever felt wind, whether the root plate sits on solid bench or on fill pushed out from an old road. Some will take the exposure. Some will be flat by February.

Steep Sidewalls, Old Road Grades and Ground That Creeps

The canyon is steep and the slopes are laced with road grades and landings going back generations. Trees rooted in the loose fill on the outboard edge of an old bench grow well and hold badly — that fill drains fast and stays loose, and a wet winter loads it until the tree and a slice of the bench leave together. A stem with a pistol-butt curve at the base has been riding moving ground for years.

So we read bases and road cuts before planning anything. On slope like this a tree that could be felled whole in a pasture gets climbed and taken apart instead, because a piece that gets away here does not stop until it reaches the road or the water.

Emergencies a Long Way Up a Gravel Road

Our shop is on Mt Pleasant Road in Kelso and we answer the phone outside business hours. There is no travel charge to come look at a job in this drainage. What we will not do is pretend the drive is short — highway to Kid Valley, gravel from there, and on a storm night the road itself is often the first thing to clear.

Trees on structures and anything blocking your only way out go to the front of the list. If something is down in a line, treat the whole span as energized and call Cowlitz PUD before anyone goes near it. A trunk resting on a conductor is live whether or not your lights are on.

A Short Working Season and Wet Snow That Folds Trees

Elevation matters more than mileage in this valley. What falls as rain down at Kid Valley arrives as heavy wet snow a few miles and a few hundred feet up the Green River, and that snow is what breaks hemlock tops and bends young conifers over the road.

So the window for anything that is not an emergency is shorter than people expect. Late summer is the good time — firm ground, dry road, room to work properly instead of fighting weather. Calling in July gets a better job than calling in December. If December is when the tree decides, we still come.
