Hay, pasture, nursery rows, a few blocks of field that have been in the same family longer than the road between here and I-5 has been paved. The soil under most of it is thinner than it looks. A foot or two of loam sits over dense subsoil that water does not move through quickly, so from November into April the root zone is effectively a shallow pan holding water. They are the structural opposite of a landscape tree: almost no butt taper, live crown confined to the top fifteen feet, dead limbs the whole way down the stem, and roots that never had room to spread because the next tree was three strides away.

Those trees are cheap to grow and expensive to correct. Opening one of these blocks hard and fast leaves the survivors holding wind they have never once had to stand in, and the next gale takes them in a line. So the sequence matters more than the price — interior stems first, windward edge kept for a season, and the work staged rather than done in an afternoon.

Grinding Stumps So a Field Can Be Mowed Again

A stump in a lawn only has to vanish below the grass. A stump in a hayfield or a pasture has to vanish below whatever you pull across it — a brush hog, a disc, a sickle bar — and that is a different depth and a different cleanup. We take field stumps low enough that iron passes over them, chase the lateral roots that ride just under the surface where a tire will find them, and either haul the grindings out or backfill and pack the hole.

Packing it matters on this ground. A rotting stump leaves a void that keeps settling for years, and an unfilled grind hole in a hayfield is a place for a tractor wheel to drop in June. Filling it once and tamping it is the difference between a field you can mow and a field with a hazard in it.

Frontage, Sight Lines and the Businesses at the Corner

There is real commercial and semi-commercial frontage out here — nurseries, equipment and landscape yards, shops, church parking, a store. Those properties have tree problems a house does not. A hedge or a fir row grown up beside a driveway apron closes sight distance onto a road where traffic is moving fast. Parking island trees planted in a space the size of a bathtub heave the asphalt and then get blamed for it. Signage disappears behind a maple nobody has touched in a decade.

Ruts Are the Damage People Actually Remember

Nobody out here remembers what we charged. They remember whether there are two wheel tracks across the hayfield in July. Loaded chip trucks and grinders are heavy, and prairie ground that feels solid in September is soft by the first week of December. So we ask before we schedule — when do you cut hay, where do you want us crossing, is there a gate we should use instead of the drive, will the ground hold a truck this month or should this wait for dry weather.

Sometimes the answer is that we chip at the tree and carry nothing across the field. Sometimes we mat the crossing. Sometimes the honest answer is that the job goes better in May and we say so, even though it means waiting. Gates get closed behind us either way, and the rounds get bucked to your stove length if you burn.
