The Coweeman does not flood the way people picture a river flooding. Most winters the problem is not a wall of water coming down the valley — it is the Cowlitz sitting high at the mouth so the Coweeman cannot get out, and the lower valley filling up quietly from the bottom end.

Standing Water Kills Different Trees Than Fast Water Does

A scouring flood takes bank and root plates with it. Slack water sitting on a field for days does something less visible and, for the trees you actually own, often worse: it drowns roots. Fine roots need air, and after several days under cold still water they start dying back. Douglas fir handles that badly. Cedar tolerates more of it. Cottonwood, willow, alder and ash barely register it, which is precisely why they are the trees standing on the valley floor and the fir is up the slope.

The catch is the delay. A conifer that spent a week with its feet under water in January will often look fine that spring and then thin out the following summer, by which point nobody connects the two. If water stood around your firs, the summer after is when to have them looked at — not the week the water goes down.

Silt Over Cobble Is Not Much to Hold Onto

The flat ground down here was built by the river: fine silt laid over old gravel and cobble. Roots run out through the soft top layer, reach rock and turn sideways rather than going down. That makes a wide, shallow plate that holds a tree upright perfectly well in still air and then gives up all at once when saturated ground and a hard south wind arrive on the same night. It is why so many trees that go over in this valley come out with a slab of lawn attached instead of snapping off partway up.

From Half-Acre Lots to Working Timberland on One Road

The lower valley is fenced lots with shops and gardens on them. Keep driving and it is managed timber. That puts two very different kinds of job on one road, and it is worth being straight about which one we are the right outfit for. Removals, hazard work, clearing around buildings and driveways, brush and stumps — that is us, and we are set up for the tight version of it next to a house. Harvesting acreage for volume is a logging job. If that is what you actually want, we will tell you so, and you will get a better price from somebody who does it every day.

Either way this is close to home. The shop is on Mt Pleasant Road, fifteen minutes from most of these driveways, so there is no travel charge up the Coweeman. Estimates are free and done on foot, and a tree that has you blocked in goes ahead of scheduled work.

What Stays on the Property

Most people up this valley own a splitter and would sooner keep the wood, which suits us. Say so at the estimate and it gets bucked to your length and left somewhere you can reach it with a wheelbarrow or a tractor. Chips are the same story — plenty of driveways and garden paths out here have been surfaced with them. If you would rather every stick of it left with us, that works too.
