Nothing Out Here Has an Empty Place to Fall

Felling whole is fast and cheap when there is room for it. There almost never is on these properties. What actually happens is that a climber goes up, ties in, and takes the tree apart top down, with every piece under control on a rigging line before it leaves the tree. Two things make our day go faster if you handle them before we arrive: move vehicles, trailers and anything with a windshield well clear of the tree, and tell us about what we cannot see — the septic tank lid under the grass, the buried water line to the barn, the drain field, the low-hanging service wire to the shop. We will find most of it anyway, but not always before a truck rolls across it.

Alder Runs Out of Time Before Anything Else on the Place

Red alder is the tree nobody planted. It claims any ground that got disturbed or stays wet, it grows fast, and it is a short-timer next to fir and cedar. Once an alder is well along in years the wood goes punky in the middle while the crown still looks green, and it starts shedding tops, whole stems and heavy limbs without much warning. The ones we prioritize are the ones leaning over a driveway, a shop or a fence the neighbor shares with you.

The tell is usually up high. Deadwood held in the top of the crown, a stem that has lost its leader, conks or shelf fungus anywhere on the trunk, or a lean that got worse after a wet winter. Alder is also the easiest wood on the property to turn into firewood, so a removal here often ends with rounds stacked by the woodshed rather than hauled off.

Winter Ground Decides What Equipment Comes In

The soils out this way hold water through the wet half of the year, and a loaded chip truck crossing a saturated lawn or pasture leaves ruts that will still be there next summer. So we plan around it. Sometimes that means working off the gravel and carrying brush out by hand, sometimes it means laying down mats, and sometimes — if the tree is not actually a hazard — the honest answer is that the job will come out better and cheaper if it waits for a dry stretch.

Hazard work does not get that luxury. When something is leaning over a building we go, and we adapt the equipment to the ground instead of the other way around. We would rather tell you up front that your back pasture is going to take a mark than surprise you with it afterward.

When It Lands on the Shop Instead of the House

Detached buildings take the hit more often than houses do out here, simply because there are more of them. Before we start cutting we photograph the tree where it lies, the point of impact and the damage underneath, with dates on the file. Then we cut only what has to be cut to make the site safe and stable, and leave the rest until your adjuster has seen it or released it.
